BEIJING — Aside from government officials, former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. joined the Philippine delegation led by President Rodrigo Duterte here.
Marcos, along with his sister Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, attended a meeting with Filipino workers at a hotel in Wangfujing Street.
That led to Duterte teasing Marcos as the potential vice president of the country if his electoral case against Vice President Leni Robredo prospers.
“Bongbong… Kung manalo siya sa protest niya, baka bago ang ating bise presidente,” Duterte teased as the crowd cheered.
Later asked what he thought of Duterte’s quip, Bongbong replied: “Well no, he is just behaving as a friend and I am very lucky that I have a friend in the president.”
Also among the government officials present at the event was Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Duterte’s running mate during the campaign period.
Bongbong was defeated by Robredo during the May 9 elections by a slim margin of 260,000 votes.
Duterte had previously acknowledged his ties with the Marcoses, a reason for his initial aloofness toward Robredo. He later appointed the vice president to head the country's housing council.
